The Local Authority have issued some new guidance in light of the emergence of the new Omicron variant of COVID-19, and there are several measures which we need to ask people to take in order to protect our community as much as possible:

  • All adults and secondary school students are requested to undertake an LFD test prior to attending the event. (This requirement includes stallholders, FOBS members, volunteers and staff).
  • All attendees over the age of 11 will be asked to wear face coverings.

Hand sanitisers will be placed around the stalls, and visitors will be encouraged to sanitise their hands regularly. We will also have an enhanced cleaning regime in place for locations which are regularly touched.

There will be no stalls where close contact or sharing of resources is required, and to avoid clusters of large groups, we would ask that only one family member queues at the cafe to purchase food/drinks.

We hope to see you on Saturday!

Congestion Charge Survey

From Anthony Brown MP

Last chance to let me know what you think about GCP proposals for congestion charging!

Next week, my survey on congestion charging closes. If you haven’t already done so, click below to let me know what you think about proposals to introduce a congestion charge and what you might want to see instead.

Over 1300 residents have already taken the time, and thank you to everyone who has given their opinion. Please, if you have two minutes, click the button below to submit your response.

One of the key questions asked by the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s ‘Making Connections’ consultation is around congestion charging for vehicles entering Cambridge City. In their plans, a city-centre congestion charge could cost up to £15 per day, or a wider zone could cost £5, roughly the same cost as a day rider bus ticket.

District and County Councillors in South Cambs have raised serious concerns about congestion charging in the past, and I agree with their remarks around cost implications, business impact and inequality.  Chief amongst those are worries that the charge is regressive, one that would unduly impact those less well off. In my view, any charge would need to be introduced in tandem with much improved, far cheaper public transport.

However, I am very aware that many residents of South Cambridgeshire rely on transport links into Cambridge. It is therefore vital that I fully understand your views on this. If you have already submitted a response, thank you and please do ignore this email!

Local Transport and Connectivity Plan

The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority has another formal transport consultation in the pipeline for early next year, and at the moment is seeking views from residents in a less formal consultation as it develops a new local transport plan. Visit the website to find out more.

Local Plan Consultation

South Cambs News

Consultation on the draft proposals for the local plan went live at the beginning of November and runs until 5 pm on 13th December. There’s lots of information in the consultation documentation, but we hope it has been laid out in a way that is easy to navigate. It can be accessed on the consultation website.

As previously shared, there are no new development site allocations within our ward, but we would encourage all parishes and residents to look at and comment on the plans. There are also areas of “Green Infrastructure” identified in the ward that residents may be keen to see expanded!

Greater Cambridge Partnership Transport Plans

Parish News

There was a zoom presentation on 16 November 2021 by the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) to explain the plans for transport from the west into Cambridge. Please visit the GCP website and have a look at the documents for details.

As you may be aware, the new Mayor is pushing for a dramatic increase in the use of buses as a way of reducing traffic and encouraging the use of more public transport. Attached below is a pdf showing proposed bus routes. These will impact Barton as the proposal increases the number of buses passing through the village both on Comberton Road and the A603. There also seems to be a route from Haslingfield. In addition, the plans include closing St Neots Road at Hardick to traffic making it buses and bicycles only. It is likely that other road users will use Hardwick High Street, through to the B1046 to travel into Cambridge, potentially increasing traffic through Barton.

Reminder Bonfires

The Parish Council continues to receive complaints about bonfires from many residents, not just because it is unpleasant and increasing the air pollution in the village, but also that it is seriously affecting those with respiratory problems.

If you are concerned or affected by this, please call the Environment Agency’s emergency incident line on 0800 807060.

As a reminder, waste needs to be disposed of properly and bonfires limited to garden waste and please light them in the evening after 6 pm. Even then, composting, chipping and cutting up for logs is a far more sensible approach to protect our health and look after our environment.
