First of all thank you to residents who are cutting hedges and overgrowth encroaching on paths, cyclepaths and pavements. These need to be kept clear for pedestrians, cyclists and, especially for pushchairs, prams and wheel chair users. We would also advise motorists to park on the road rather than on pavements or cyclepaths. Many think that parking off the road keeps the roads clear, but forget that the priority should be for pedestrians and cyclists. See Living Streets website.

Highways Datalogger Results
Cambridgeshire County Council installed vehicle dataloggers on Comberton Road, Haslingfield Road and New Road over the period of 29th June to 6th July 2021, and also on the A603 at Lordsbridge hamlet from 13th to 20th July 2021.
Highways use v85 numbers to judge the “normal” speed of a road. Remove the top 15% of speeds to give the 85th percentile:
Comberton Road: 29mph
New Road (near the school): 33 mph
Haslingfield Road: 42 mph
A603 in the 50 mph limit: 52 mph
The top speeds recorded:
Comberton Road: 51 mph
New Road (near the school): 55 mph
Haslingfield Road: 80 mph
A603 in the 50 mph limit: 101 mph
Percentage of vehicles breaking the speed limit:
Comberton Road: 9%
New Road (near the school): 29%
Haslingfield Road: 80%
A603 in the 50 mph limit: 26%
Speedwatch continues with sessions roughly once every two weeks. The above data has been passed on to the area Speedwatch coordinator.
Our successful Local Highways Initiative bid resulted in a grant of £15k. We need to raise addition money to support the works associated with the grant. (We also have the opportunity to bid for a grant of next year (2022/23) which needs to be submitted in September.) The 2021/22 money will be spent on 40 mph buffer zones on Comberton and Haslingfield Road and additional signage on the A603. There will also be a modification to the pavement at the junction of the A603 and Halingfield Road to make crossing easier. We will continue to monitor speed on our roads to see if additional calming measures are needed after the 2021/22 LHI work is completed.
The Wonder of Wood, Cambridge’s FIRST EVER wood fair, was a wild success in 2019 and will, excitingly, be back again this year.
The Wonder of Wood showcases some of the region’s finest wood workers, crafters and artisans, and the ethos is to introduce children to the joys of engaging with nature, and to entice them away from screen time and back into the great outdoors.
From willow weaving to artisan carpentry, den building to spoon carving, survival skills to tree surgery, plus plenty more, this is a great weekend out. Get the children involved in the many woodland activities that will be on offer such as pond dipping and den building, find out more about the magical fenland wildlife, and listen to captivating stories from our storyteller. There will be plenty of opportunity to marvel at wood workers creating things of beauty in front of your very eyes, and you can even try your hand at these wonderful crafts yourself! Not only this, but there will be locally produced food and drink on hand to ensure you don’t go hungry or thirsty. We hope to see you there!
Adults: £10
Under 16s: FREE
Following the recent inspection of the playground equipment and facilities, the roundabout has been placed out of service until repair works can be carried out.
There are a number of minor issues with other equipment, benches, tables and so on. If you are free one weekend during August and are willing to help, please contact Sarah Pitchford or Ian Minto (Parish Council). Sarah will organize working parties and arrange dates.
After a time like no other, where businesses across the food and drink supply chain have struggled to survive, we would like to invite our local businesses to a free webinar from 1pm to 3:30pm on 22 July discussing how the sector can work together to recover.
Our panel of experienced speakers, including local buyers and suppliers such as St John’s College, Andrew’s Butchers, Cambridge Juice Company and Cambridge Cheese Company, will draw on their real-life experience to discuss:
There will also be an open discussion session for you to ask questions and add your own experiences and thoughts for the future. You can carry on the conversation through our online network – an invitation will be sent out after the event.
Register here to be part of this exciting conversation.
Thanks

Covid-19 community update – mass vaccination walk-in event this Sunday (18 July)
Dear volunteer coordinators, parish councillors and district councillors
Mass vaccination walk-in event this Sunday (18 July)
A mass vaccination walk-in event is taking place this Sunday at the Hub in Cambourne and we are asking for your help to spread the word in your community.
In general, vaccination take up in the district is good, but it is recognised that transport difficulties and a lack of flexible, non-appointment based walk-in events in the district can be a barrier for some people.
The venue will have both AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines available. Anyone who is 18 or over will be able to have a first or second dose (second doses are available if their first dose was eight weeks ago or more; on or before 23 May).
Venue: The Hub, High Street, Cambourne, CB23 6GW
Date: Sunday 18 July
Time: Drop in any time from 10am to 4pm
A face mask must be worn.
A leaflet drop to Cambourne and surrounding villages is being done on Thursday and Friday this week, but we would like your support with your local networks to ensure as many people as possible are aware.
Below are links to our social media channels that you can visit and share the posts about the event. We have also included in our email the event leaflet and images designed for social media if you prefer to use these. The main thing is to make sure people are aware of this opportunity.

With further unlocking taking place on 19 July and infection rates increasing, it is important for as many people to be protected through the phenomenal national vaccination programme as possible. We will send you our regular update with other information later this week. Thank you in advance for your support with this event and for everything else you have been doing.
Best wishes

Speedwatch volunteers have carried out several road-side surveys over the last few months. The focus has been on Haslingfield and Wimpole Roads where we know speeding is an issue. Additional volunteers are welcome and Speedwatch training has started again via remote learning. If anyone wants to join the group, please contact either Sarah Pitchford or Andy Martin via the Parish Council links. In addition to the “hi-vis” watch, our MVAS equipment has been running on Wimpole Road. The latest data from 24th June to 9th July registered 28,860 vehicles leaving Barton with 35% travelling at more than 35 mph (speeding ticket threshold), a top speed of 71 mph and a v85 (remove the top 15% of speeds) being 39 mph. As the minimum speeding fine is now £100, a speed camera capturing the fast drivers during this two-week period on Wimpole Road would have raised £1 million in fines.

We have been awarded a grant for highways improvement. This grant will help fund some traffic issues we have in the village. CCC Highways will now work on detailed designs that we hope will be approved (traffic orders). We will share these with you when we have the designs.
We are pleased to share with you our July newsletter – .
In a world where we have become more dependent on using technology and being digitally connected, we are increasingly aware that the downside to using is the increase of scams, amounting to a staggering 41% of crime is now either on the phone or online. To help tackle this issue, we have launched a SLING YOUR HOOK scams awareness campaign to run on our social channels during July. Our newsletter contains more information on this campaign and a link to our website’s dedicated scams section, which includes clear guidance on protecting yourself and others from becoming a victim.
On a brighter note, we have some great new partnership opportunities to share with you, including our new partnership with Deliveroo to train riders in community safety, discounts from Patlock for our members and supporters, and the chance to win a fun-filled Croods 2 inspired family vacation.
With all this and more, we hope you enjoy this month’s edition.
Keep safe,
