Neighbourhood Policing

Neighbourhood Policing

Neighbourhood policing is at the heart of everything we do and building trust and confidence with our communities is vital in helping us to prevent crime and bring offenders to justice.

We want to ensure our neighbourhood teams are accessible to, responsible for and accountable to their communities.

With this in mind, last month we launched a dedicated neighbourhood policing page for you as the residents of South Cambs.

The pages allow you to see who your local officers are, read the latest news and appeals and most importantly give you the opportunity to tell us your concerns so we can help rectify the issues that matter to you most.

Tell us what concerns you most in your area?

By working together, we can help to find solutions to the local problems that matter to you most. Whether it’s anti-social behaviour, e-scooters, burglary, speeding or bike theft, we want to hear from you.

Your concerns will help us to understand community needs and work collaboratively with partners, the public and communities to solve local problems.

If you have a community concern you would like to raise, contact us here, it takes just a couple of minutes.

Please note that if you wish to report a crime or suspicious behaviour, continue to tell us through our online reporting portal here.

Defibrillator on the Recreation Ground

Parish News

A defibrillator has been installed at the recreation ground on the Bowls Club shed near the playground entrance.

Installation, purchase and maintenance paid by the following:

Barton Parish Council
Barton Village Charitable Trust
Barton Horticultural Society (Barton Gardeners)

Many thanks!

Thanks also to the Bowls Club for allowing us to site the unit there and for the connection to power.

We now have two defibrillators in the village, the other at the school (rear wall facing the Old School House, School Lane). Follow instructions at the site for use of both units.

COVID Community Update

COVID community update – 9 September 2021

Dear volunteer coordinators and Parish Councillors

There are a couple of updates this week that aren’t directly linked to COVID support, but we thought you may find the information useful as you are so well-connected to your communities. After the two brief COVID updates below, you’ll see some information about how people can support Afghan refugees if they wish to, as well as information about flood prevention work the County Council is undertaking.

COVID vaccination update

The government has published information resources on COVID-19 vaccination for eligible children and young people to reflect new information for at-risk children and young people aged 12 to 15 years.

Changes to self-isolation

You are probably aware that from 16 August the rules around self-isolation changed, so that people who are double jabbed or aged under 18 are no longer legally required to self-isolate if they are identified as a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case. Instead, people will now be advised to take a PCR test (which can be ordered for free online or by calling 119). These people are still advised to consider other precautions such as wearing a face covering in enclosed spaces, and limiting contact with other people, especially with anyone who is clinically extremely vulnerable. You can see attached a poster from Cambridgeshire County Council to help communicate these changes.

Afghan refugees: donations

Many South Cambridgeshire residents have been deeply moved by the events in Afghanistan and want to donate and help Afghan refugees relocating to the UK through the Government’s Afghan Locally Employed Support (LES) scheme. The Council has made three homes available for Afghan families relocating to the UK. These homes will be fully furnished and up to three months’ worth of food and essential supplies are provided to help the families start new lives. Our latest update can be found here, announcing our partnership with Cambridge City Council to provide wraparound support for the Afghan families.

At this time, we are unable to accept donations directly, but anyone who would like to donate their time, goods, or money can do so through the following national and local organisations:

  1. Cambridge Convoy Refugee Action Group
  2. Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum
  3. Distribute Aid
  4. British Red Cross

County Council flood prevention survey

As part of the County Council’s Community Flood Action Programme, ‘Riparian’ guidance is to be updated to make it more useful for those who have a watercourse on their land. As part of this work, they want to better understand what residents and landowners currently understand about responsibilities of maintaining watercourses (ditches, streams etc.) on private land. A short survey (5 questions) has been published, and we are helping to promote this to residents. If you would be willing to share our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram posts within your communities, that would be helpful. Alternatively, you can access or share the survey using this direct link. The deadline to respond is 30 September. You can find out more about Riparian ownership on the County Council’s website.

We will send a further community update when there is useful information to share.

Thank you again for all your support.

Best wishes

Wonder of Wood this Weekend

THE WONDER OF WOOD

11th & 12th September, 2021

10am to 5pm at Burwash Manor,

New Road, Barton,

Cambridge CB23 7EY.

The Wonder of Wood, Cambridge’s FIRST EVER wood fair, was a wild success in 2019 and will, excitingly, be back again this year.

The Wonder of Wood showcases some of the region’s finest wood workers, crafters and artisans, and the ethos is to introduce children to the joys of engaging with nature, and to entice them away from screen time and back into the great outdoors.

From willow weaving to artisan carpentry, den building to spoon carving, survival skills to tree surgery, plus plenty more, this is a great weekend out. Get the children involved in the many woodland activities that will be on offer such as pond dipping and den building, find out more about the magical fenland wildlife, and listen to captivating stories from our storyteller. There will be plenty of opportunity to marvel at wood workers creating things of beauty in front of your very eyes, and you can even try your hand at these wonderful crafts yourself! Not only this, but there will be locally produced food and drink on hand to ensure you don’t go hungry or thirsty. We hope to see you there!

Adults: £10

Under 16s: FREE

Speeding Issues

Parish News

Did you know that Cambridgeshire Police have a “Community Concerns”  crime reporting page? On this page is a reporting form with a drop down menu. A recent news item sent by Neighbourhood Alert talked about a new team of police officers set up to crack down on speeding drivers in Cambridgeshire. The news item points to the community concerns reporting page. I have filed a report on speeding for Barton. Action is more likely if concerned residents also submit reports for their roads where speeding is an issue.

Our MVAS unit has been on Comberton Road and Haslingfield Road recently. High top speeds are still an issue but it does seem that speeds have reduced on both roads. Community Speedwatch has been conducted on these roads with data submitted to the area Speedwatch coordinator. Maybe this is starting to have an impact?

As you may have noticed, it does seem that more vehicles are on the roads. Our MVAS data does show an increase in volume but still no where near the levels pre-March 2020.
