Keyless car thefts warning

If your car has Passive Keyless Entry and Start (PKES), it may be susceptible to the ‘Relay Attack’’ theft method.
Toyota Hilux, Jaguar Landrover in particular, Range Rover, Lexus and Mercedes are all vehicles that are being targeted by thieves.
What is a ‘Relay Attack’?

Thieves will place a device near the car and another near the key.

The device relays messages between the key and the car, allowing the vehicle to open, even if the key is physically far away. Some devices can pick up a signal from more than 100 metres.
How can you prevent this?

  • Purchase a signal blocking faraday pouch to store your keys in (including spares). Make sure the pouch is designed specifically for the keys and test it by inserting your fob into the pouch and attempting to open your vehicle.
  • Refer to your user manual to see if your keyless entry fob can be deactivated at night.
  • Check that you have a motion-sensor enabled fob, which goes to sleep when stored at home.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted, please contact us using our online reporting form or webchat, those without internet access should call 101.

If you believe a crime is in action, always call 999.

What are your priorities for South Cambridgeshire District Council?

Residents and businesses are being asked to help shape South Cambridgeshire District Council’s plans for the years ahead – to help ensure the area remains one of the best places to live and work in the country.

The Council has identified five key priorities to help achieve its goals. Councillors now want to hear the views of local people so they can help influence the production of a full Corporate Plan for 2025 and beyond. This Plan, when finalised, will set out the actions, initiatives and strategies the Council will work through to meet its targets.

You can view the plans in more detail and have your say. Anyone who completes the survey will have the chance to be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £50 One4All vouchers. To complete the survey via an alternative format, such as using a printed copy or in an alternative language, please contact ku.vog.sbmacs@semehcs.ytilauqe or call 01954 713 000.

Many thanks for your support,

Tom

Bus Franchise Consultation

If you have time, read the 120-page document by the Combined Authority on proposals for Bus Franchising and then fill in the 90+ minute questionnaire. Here is the link. There is a shorter 15-minute version of the questionnaire but this still refers back to the rather large document.

Highways Maintenance Priority Consultation

We have been asked to share and submit feedback on the priority for maintaining our footpaths, cycle paths and other public right of ways. The consultation back ground is in the attached document and contents of the email from CCC Highways below. There is an interactive map where comments can be added. This map has layers for cyclist, walkers and wheelers, and one for public right of ways. A quick review shows that most of the pavements in Barton are classed second lowest and lowest priority (out of 6 classes) whereas the shared pavement (cycle path) between Comberton, Barton and Cambridge is classed as the second highest priority. Please provide comments either directly to CCC Highways or to the Parish Council.

Dear Parish or Town Clerk/Chair

I would like to make you aware of a consultation which has been launched by the Highways & Transport service at Cambridgeshire County Council. This follows proposals for a consultation which were presented to the Council’s Highways & Transport Committee in January 2024.  The committee paper can be found here: Document.ashx (cmis.uk.com). The consultation seeks input regarding proposals for an ‘Active Travel Hierarchy’.

The Active Travel Hierarchy looks to introduce a way of prioritising maintenance activities to better reflect the use of the highway network by walkers, cyclists and other non-motorised traffic.  This will support the Council’s Active Travel Strategy and its ambition to make walking or cycling the natural choice for shorter journeys, in turn helping to reduce road traffic congestion, improve journey times, and contributing to carbon reduction in the County.

We would like to invite your feedback on the proposals, so that we can better understand which active travel routes and public rights of way are considered important by our communities, and what maintenance activities stakeholders might like us to prioritise.

This is a public consultation that is being promoted on the Council’s social media channels. We would also appreciate you promoting this consultation locally in your parish communities, to encourage wide participation, so we can gauge residents’ views.

The consultation is open for responses until Monday 16th September.  I have attached a background document to this email, but you can also access the consultation website here: https://consultcambs.uk.engagementhq.com/active-travel-hierarchy. Please feel free to circulate this link amongst your local residents.  You can do this by sharing social media posts that started from 22 July on the County Council’s channels, which will be continuing in the weeks ahead.

Please direct any questions about the consultation to ku.vog.erihsegdirbmac@ygetartsatadtessa

Car Break-in and “Casing Houses”

We received a report of a suspicious chap robbing a car at the recreation ground and then casing a house that had windows open. This has been reported to the police but it is a good reminder of the risks of leaving cars parked away from property and the risks of leaving windows open in hot weather.
