Barton’s Annual Festive ‘Dress up’

As the nights are drawing in and the evenings are getting colder, it’s time to start thinking about winter festivities and the countdown to Christmas.  This year, Barton’s annual ‘dress up’ for December returns with the theme of Village Advent Calendar. As in 2021, we would like to decorate the village with 24 winter displays for everyone to admire and enjoy throughout the month of December.

Residents of Barton we would love you to join in the fun! If you or your household would like to dress up your garden/window/hedge with a festive scene as part of the 24 day countdown, please email  moc.liamg@drofhctipeaharas to register your interest.

Every display of winter is welcome. So don’t get your tinsel in a twist, you are welcome to capture the seasonal spirit and joy of Christmas in whichever way makes you smile.

For how it will work….Households taking part will be allocated a number between 1 and 24. Then each day throughout December, those participating will reveal their festive scene on their allocated day and their number on display. Once each scene is revealed it would be nice if they could stay on display for the remainder of the month.

We hope you will join in the festive fun!

2024 Crime and Community Survey

2024 Crime and Community Survey

Today sees the launch of our annual survey looking at your experience of crime and your connection to your local community. The data from the survey goes into a report which we publish on the website, and use to help prioritise our work.

This year we’re working with academic staff at the University of Northumbria who have provided some optional questions at the end of the survey related to health. This is linked to their studies on fear of crime and health outcomes.

The survey takes about ten minutes to complete, and if you can spare the time, we really hope that you will make your views known to us – it really is appreciated!

Village Pond Update

Dear Residents,

Many of you will have heard about or seen, there have been a number of dead fish in the pond over the last few days following the recent heavy rains.

The PC have been in touch with the Environment Agency who came out to the village yesterday afternoon and have taken some water samples for testing. We are waiting for the official report but initial findings do not suggest the fish deaths are a result of contamination. The Environment Agency Officer’s preliminary conclusions were that the heavy rain and stormy weather caused an oxygen inversion within the pond’s water column causing deoxygenated water at the bottom of the pond to switch places with the oxygenated water nearer the surface where the fish live.  The fish living nearer the surface therefore sadly are likely to have died from suffocation.

We will await for the final report and keep residents updated.

Our huge thanks to John Boocock and David Hodge for all their hard work in removing and disposing of the dead fish over the last few days.
