Road Works in Barton

There will be road works on New Road Monday 2nd February in addition to the Greenway works. Probably for pothole repairs. There will also be road works on Comberton Road on Wednesday 4th February for Highway improvements. Both sets will have lights or stop/go boards.

M11 slip road closed tonight

Dear Customer

Important roadworks information

M11 southbound junction 12 exit slip road – technology

I am writing to tell you that we plan to carry out technology works on the M11 southbound junction 12 exit slip road. Once complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, smoother and better-defined road surface.

We plan to complete this work overnight on Friday 30 January 2026. We will work between 8pm and 6am only, weather permitting.

Closures and diversions

To carry out the work safely, we will need to close the M11 southbound junction 12 exit slip road, and divert traffic as follows:

  • Traffic will continue southbound down the M11.
  • Exit the M11 junction 11.
  • At the roundabout take the fourth exit to rejoin the M11 northbound.
  • Exit the M11 junction 12 where the diversion ends.

Barton Road Closed Friday Night

Following works to complete a section of the Barton Greenway between the Haggis Farm interchange and the Barton Road lay-by (closest to the city centre), we will now be carrying out some remedial surfacing works to improve the overall quality of the road.

As such, Barton Road will be closed overnight on Friday 30 January from 8pm to 6am between the Haggis Farm interchange and the Barton Road layby entrance (closest to the city).

The diversion route is as follows: Cambridge Road (A603) – Ermine Way (A1198) – Old North Road (A1198) – A505 – A10 – Hauxton Road – High Street – Trumpington Road (A1134) – Fen Causeway (A1134) – Newnham Road (A603) – Barton Road (A603).

Access to properties within the closure will be maintained throughout, and traffic management operatives will be stationed at each closure gate to assist. Access to any properties outside of the closure will require use of the approved diversion route.

We appreciate this may be disruptive and would like to thank you for your patience throughout the duration of our works on Barton Road.

Parallel Crossing Work

You will probably have seen traffic lights and work at the raised table on New Road near Kings Grove and Burwash Manor. This is to install the parallel crossing (zebra crossing plus cycle lane). The work is planned for this week. Belisha beacons are on back order so may not be installed until April.

As a reminder, the roads will be closed overnight tonight (Monday 19 January 2026) to complete the surface works.

Reminder Overnight Road Closures

Reminder that B1046 New Road will be closed overnight from 8:00pm to 6:00 am with road closures planned for the following nights this week and next Monday on the rest of B1046 and surrounding roads in Barton village centre.

EWR Pop Up Events

In our October 2025 ELRG meeting I mentioned that we would be running a series of drop in community ‘pop up’ sessions in the new year, and that I would be in touch with more information once the events were finalised. There are three sessions taking place in the eastern section of the route. Full event details are below and all pop-ups will be added to our website here:  East West Rail | Events

Wednesday 14 January, 11am-3pm – Cambourne: Morrisons, Broad St, Great Cambourne, CB23 6EY

Wednesday 21 January, 10am-4pm – Cambridge: Cambridge City Market (near the M&S), Market Hill, CB1 0SS

Tuesday 10 February, 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm – Great Shelford: Great Shelford Library, 10-12 Wollards Ln, Great Shelford CB22 5LZ

As I mentioned at the ELRG meeting, the purpose of these sessions is to introduce people to East West Rail who may otherwise be unaware of the scheme. High-level project information will be provided, and people will be signposted to channels where they can find out more about EWR. Designs won’t be shared during these sessions and feedback won’t be explicitly recorded, although if frequently asked questions emerge we may compile these and share them with answers via the newsletter or website.

As the aim of the sessions is to introduce the project to the general public in areas of high footfall, we won’t be widely publicising them in advance. However, I wanted you to be aware of where we will be and when.
