Police warning following distraction burglaries

Police are urging residents to be vigilant following a series of distraction burglaries reported in and around Cambridge.

The incidents reported have involved two women claiming to offer massages to help back, knee and leg pain, specifically to the elderly, disabled and vulnerable individuals.

Here are some simple steps you can take to help protect yourself. Please share with any vulnerable neighbours or relatives.

·  Check who’s at the door using a viewer or spyhole.

·  If you do open the door, keep the security chain on.

·  Always ask for ID and confirm it with the company before letting anyone in.

·  Use a trusted phone number from a directory or official website – don’t rely on the number shown on their ID card, as it could be fake. For utility companies, contact their customer service team. Close the door while you make the call.

·  If you’re unsure, arrange for the visitor to return when someone else can be with you.

You can read more about the incidents on our website.

CCC Planned IT Maintenance

Dear Reader,

Following on from our Aurora August Newsletter, re-attached above for reference, we are writing to make you aware that we are making changes to our Asset Management System and need to go offline from Thursday 18th – Sunday 21st September 2025 to enable this. Further information can be found below.

We’re upgrading our systems.

As part of essential IT upgrades, our Report It system – used to report highways issues such as potholes, traffic signal faults, or damaged signs – will be temporarily unavailable during the following period:

From 6.00pm on Thursday 18 September to 12.00am (midnight) on Sunday 21 September 2025.

This temporary unavailability is due to the transition of our Highways and Transport maintenance system to a new, cloud-based platform. This upgrade is an important step toward improving the speed, reliability, and future capabilities of how we manage your reports.

When will the service resume?

The Report It system will be back online and fully operational by Monday 22 September 2025.

Reporting an Emergency?

If you need to report a highways emergency (e.g., a serious hazard or immediate risk to public safety), please use our emergency reporting process, which remains available as usual, Report a highways emergency | Cambridgeshire County Council.

A new look for Report It

When the system is back online, you will notice a refreshed look and feel. We’ve made some small updates to the user interface to create a smoother, more consistent experience.

Update to the Customer Facing Map – Report It Pins

As part of recent system changes, we’ve taken the opportunity to review the usability and accuracy of our customer-facing map. You’ll notice a significant reduction in the number of Report It ‘pins’. This is because we’ve archived older and duplicate customer reports in our new system, while retaining all reports from the last six months.

Archived reports will still be reviewed and closed out by officers to ensure they are properly addressed. If you wish to re-report an issue that no longer appears on the map following go-live, please do so via the new-look site once it becomes available.

Thank you for your patience

County Broadband Holben Close

County Broadband remedial work on Holben Close 11th to 16th September 2025.

Greenways Update – Comberton Road Work to Start

Greenways team plan to start work on a raised table on Comberton Road Tuesday 26th August 2026.

This will go in at the end of the current shared pavement between the farm cottages (12 and 14) and 9 Comberton Road and is part of the traffic calming measures enabling cyclists to transition more safely between the carriageway and shared pavement. These works are quite extensive including pavement, drainage, and road alterations and likely to last 4 or 5 weeks. The road will be restricted to one lane at this point with traffic controlled by two-way lights 24/7 for the period. Work will continue at Kings Grove/Burwash with three-way lights.

The plan is to open the pavement between School Lane and High Street and then the crew working there will move to Comberton Road raised table.

Greenways Update

Work has started on Barton Road (A603) in to Cambridge with the layout of a compound near Coton roundabout and erection of barriers. Construction of the new shared pavement is due to begin 1st September. These works will be overnight with the road closed.

Work in Barton village will add a new phase soon with construction of a raised table on Comberton Road. The raised table is part of traffic calming measures at the section where cyclists join the shared pavement. This will be under two-way lights.

Barton Road Closure Overnights for 18 Weeks

Following my previous email,  I would like to update you on our latest plans for works commencing on Barton Road.

We had originally planned for our overnight works starting the w/c 11 August to be carried out under temporary traffic lights. We have since been informed we can carry out these works as overnight road closures. This is a positive step for the deliverability of the project as a road closure will enable us to deliver the overall programme in a more efficient manner. The times for the closure will be 8pm-6am each night. The road will be reopened to two-way traffic in the day, with a speed restriction and temporary traffic lights in place to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross at specific locations (push button lights).

The diversion route for these closures will be the same as advised in our previous correspondence. As a reminder, the official diversion route will be Cambridge Road (A603) – Ermine Way (A1198) – Old N Road (A1198)– A505 – A10 – Hauxton Road – High Street – Trumpington Road (A1134) – The Fen Causeway (A1134) – Newnham Road (A603) – Barton Road (A603).

Following our enabling works taking place, we will formally begin from w/c Monday 1 September for approximately 18 weeks to widen and improve the walking and cycling path that runs alongside Barton Road. The works will be carried out as outlined previously.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and would like to assure you we are working hard to ensure we can deliver our works as quickly as possible.

Kind regards

Jonathan Camp

Door-to-door sellers operating in the area

We’ve had reports of door-to-door sellers visiting homes in the area.

They are often nicknamed ‘Nottingham Knockers’ and involve people claiming to have recently been released from prison and selling goods to help them raise funds and mend their ways.

However, this is not part of any officially-recognised offender rehabilitation programme.

Residents are being urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious behaviour to police. If a crime is taking place call 999 otherwise report online or call 101.

Kind Regards,

Detective Sergeant Jonathan Lockwood
