Catalytic Converter Thefts & Suspicious “Police”

Neighbourhood Watch

Three men dressed in black driving a silver Ford Focus stole two catalytic converters off cars, one from the back of Main Street, Hardwick and the other from Grace Crescent Hardwick.  Please be aware and call Police if anything is seen!

A Barton Parish Councillor had seen two men dressed in police uniform outside of the our post office around 7:25pm on Friday evening (23rd September). She asked if there was a problem and they asked who she was replied she was a Councillor. They asked if she lived there. She responded with no, but knew who does. The men then said everything was fine.

They then drove off in a blue Corsa with a faulty brake light, witnessed as the Councillor was following in her car. It was reported to Chamara who contacted the police and they informed him it wasn’t the police, but gave him a crime reference number in case anything subsequently happened. They said they would keep an eye out!

Please report anything suspicious to the Police on 101 or 999 if an emergency.

20 mph in Barton Consultation

We plan to introduce 20 mph on roads in the centre of Barton. This follows on from the public engagement two years ago. The 20 mph zone will include High Street and off roads, part of Comberton Road and New Road (village centre) to include Kings Grove and School Lane.

20 mph was trailed on the High Street as part of Covid emergency regulations and reduced traffic speeds. 20 mph in the village centre in front of the school at the junction at the pond is also part of Barton Greenways plans.

County Council Highways have drawn up the plans and will have a period for formal consultation. Notices will be placed in the local press on the 5th October 2022.

This will trigger a Statutory 21-day Consultation period whereby any interested parties may make representations to the Council either in favour of objecting to the proposals. The consultation period will close on the 26th October 2022.

The Hoops Opening

“The Hoops is reopening!! With new landlord Neil Kirkland opening the doors, hopefully on Friday the 30th September at 2 pm.

He and a team of family and friends have been working hard to clean, tidy and refresh the pub whilst keeping its old charm.

The Hoops has always been a hub of the community and Neil is keen to keep that feeling about the pub and to being a part of the wonderful village that is Barton.

He is looking forward to welcoming the village back to the Hoops and hopes for everyone’s support.”

18 Bus Route Ends

You have probably heard about Stagecoach cancelling various bus routes in Cambridgeshire. This includes our 18 bus service. This is going to impact many our village and surrounding communities. A resident in Bourne has set up a petition to sign. We would also encourage lobbying our local politicians including MP, County Councillor, District Councillor and the Mayor’s office as well as complaining directly to Stagecoach. Barton Parish Council is doing the same.

We don’t believe Stagecoach has made any effort in promoting rural bus routes nor have they engaged with local communities to see how their services could be tailored for the benefit of all.

We are not sure how cancelling bus routes fits in with the general plan to increase bus services and the proposal to introduce congestion charges in Cambridge.

We are not sure how cancelling the 18 bus will impact traffic flows through Barton given the increase in the number of houses in the area and the controversy over Cambourne to Cambridge bus routes.

If there are any other concerns you have on transport in general, please contact the Parish Council.

Community Pass Wimpole

I am writing to you about an exciting new initiative recently launched by the Wimpole Estate, a National Trust property in Cambridgeshire. They are offering local community groups free admission to the estate and its facilities. This is a fantastic opportunity to encourage creativity and connection with nature.

Polly Ingham-Watts, the General Manager of Wimpole Hall, is passionate that everyone can enjoy all that Wimpole has to offer and recognises that National Trust membership or the standard admission charges are not accessible to everyone. Each pass issued under this initiative would provide free access for up to 16 people.

Passes may be used on any day except on bank holidays and the weekends preceding bank holidays.  Those intending to use the pass are asked to email ku.gro.tsurtlanoitan@llahelopmiw or call the estate before coming, stating the name of your group, the number of people and approximate time of arrival.  Where practical community groups are encouraged to visit during weekdays as Wimpole can get very busy at weekends when there may be less scope to cater for additional needs.

If you think that members of groups would be interested in receiving free admission passes, please return the attached form via email to ku.gro.tsurtlanoitan@enoyreverofelopmiw.

Wimpole Estate consists of a historic mansion, beautiful gardens, a show farm and extensive parkland, there is plenty of free parking for cars and minibuses, a visitor reception centre, electric buggies to assist people with limited mobility, as well as cafes and shops.  For more information visit https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wimpole-estate.

Kind regards,

Time to Trim Hedges

Please trim your road-side hedge back to your property boundary. There has been a spurt in growth of brambles and these need to be cut back to allow safe use of pavements for pedestrians. As a guide, hedges use be trimmed back to expose the full width of the pavement, be in line with street signs, and or be inline with the inside of telegraph polls.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Parking on Pavements

The Parish Council has received complaints again about parking on pavements. Can we remind the public that driving a car onto a pavement is illegal and that cars should be parked on the road. Pavement blocking is a major headache for pedestrians, disabled and families with prams and pushchairs. We know that people think that parking on the pavement frees up the road, but please think about freeing up pavements.
