Green Bin Collection Issues
Have you experienced issues with Green Bin collection?
Common reasons for refusal to empty the bin:
- Contents stuck inside. Make sure they are loose. Grass cuttings can compact and become stuck to the bottom especially when wet. Can be an issue in the winter with heavy frosts, so ensure the lid opens and, again, contents are not stuck.
- Items that cannot be accepted. Ensure that there is no soil or rubble mixed in with garden waste. See greatercambridgewaste.org/residents/what-goes-in-which-bin
- Bin is too heavy. This is a little arbitrary but a good guide is that a 240 standard bin should not weigh more than 16 kg. Bin lorries have lift sensors that trip at 30 kg. Some garden waste is surprisingly heavy such as windfall apples. A quarter full 240 litre bin of apples weighs about 33 kg and will trigger the bin lorry lifting sensor.
- More than one green bin? Ensure that all bins are labelled with house and street details (especially on shared driveways) and that extra green bins are paid for with clear labelling.
