SUMMARY:Traffic Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Traffic and Barton \nAs most are aware traffic has been highlighted as a significant issue with the Barton community. At the beginning of the year\, traffic volume caused queues along the A603 and the B1046 for two hours every workday morning. With further development at Cambourne\, Bourn airfield\, St Neots\, Orwell and Comberton\, the volume of traffic is expected to double in the next five to tens years if nothing is done to control the growth. The Girton interchange\, Cambourne to Cambridge (C2C) mass transport system and East West Rail (EWR) are big picture solutions that could help reduce the flow through our village and we will support these schemes if appropriate. Reducing traffic volume would help in many ways including a reduction in pollution elegantly highlight by the children of Barton school earlier in the year when they presented a petition to Cambridge County Council. Since lock down\, traffic volumes have dropped significantly and it would be great if they could stay that way. Because of this\, our recent focus as a Parish Council has been on speed. We have data gathered by the County Council and data from our own Mobile Vehicle Activated System (MVAS). These data show high average speeds and extreme top speeds on most of our roads. As an example 40 mph and 48 mph V85 speeds in a 30 mph on Wimpole Road is alarming with a top speed of 96 mph entering the village. We have approval to gather data on the A603 and also had many additional community speedwatch sites surveyed. Since 6th July speedwatch has started again with three surveys so far. Gathering data and monitoring speed is key to what we do next to calm traffic and make it a safer place to live. In addition\, we have engaged almost weekly with County Council Highways and Lina Nieto our local councillor to explore traffic calming options. We are now at the stage where we understand what measures are allowed for traffic calming\, how much they are likely to cost\, and what we see are the best solutions for each road in our village. We plan to present these to the whole community mid-August so that we can all agree on a long term plan. Traffic calming costs a lot of money and part of the discussion must include how we pay for this. It is also likely that any agreed scheme can only be implemented in stages so we need to agree on priorities. Barton Parish council encourage all to come along\, view plans and provide feedback so that we embark on a consistent strategy agreed by the whole community.
